Engagement
Our Engagement Pathway is embedded with the belief that learning is driven by curiosity, supporting children and young people to develop their personal skills of exploration and social communication. Children and young people are encouraged to develop and strengthen the roots of learning so that they can explore the world around them whilst developing independence and confidence in their own abilities.
Who is the Pathway for?
Pupils on this pathway are working below subject-specific learning and are supported to develop their engagement profile focusing on exploration, realisation, anticipation, persistence, and initiation. Their learning is very sensory-based, and through a holistic balance of provision and learning, pupils develop their understanding of themselves and their place in the world around them.
An Integrated Approach
Learning on the Engagement Pathway promotes holistic development through a balance of provision, topic, and interest-led learning experiences. Within this pathway we promote:
-
Total Communication: We use a wide range of communication methods to ensure all pupils are heard and understood, promoting strong pupil voice. This includes Intensive Interaction, using children and young people’s own language of sounds and movements to build social connection and turn-taking.
-
Physical Wellbeing: Daily focused movement activities including postural management, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy are woven into the daily timetable. Our staff work closely with physiotherapists and occupational therapists to ensure learners are meeting their outcomes and are ready for learning.
-
Regulation: We use a range of sensory environments both inside and outdoor, alongside personalised strategies and programmes, to ensure that our pupils are in their ‘just rightness’ for learning.
Curriculum Focus Areas
The Engagement Pathway curriculum has four main threads that run throughout all learning.
